Today Chris is presenting a paper at a conference at the University. His topic is "Identity Crisis in Eighteenth Century China - Stone or Jade?" I read most of his paper and I actually understood it. As you can see by this picture, this imperial concubine was suffering from more than one type of identity crisis. She is not only dresses as a man, but also as a European. Very interesting. Everyone send their good luck vibes out to him that he'll do a great job when he's presenting.

Edit: Chris did awesome on his presentation. He also ended up talking with a professor from the history department for quite awhile. This prof. thinks he maybe able to help Chris get on as a Teaching Assistant in the History dept. for the fall. This would be awesome for expanding Chris' resume and marketability. Chris has often thought he would like to teach in the history department, but he thought the competition was too stiff so he may as well stay where he is in the Chinese department. However, the professor he spoke with today was so impressed by his presentation that he virtually told Chris that he wants him to be his TA in the fall!!

Okay...this is the third entry I did not read that you posted.

Now that is interesting - the identity crisis thing. What did he have to say about it - was it pressure from the west to be like the Europeans and then pressure to be respected like a man?

Hmmm, I'll have to ask him to be sure. I did read part of his paper, and it seemed to me that it was the new emporer, and his vastly different way of ruling that caused such dramitic shifts in the way society viewed itself. I'll get back to you on this.

Have you guys seen the movie Orlando? It's about this woman who start the beginning of the movie as a woman but she time travels forward and every so often she is a man. It's quite interesting (and it's been a long time since I've seen it) because I think she gets confused sometimes about who she is and where she is.
