On Saturday we took an hour drive up to Elk and visited a Christmas tree farm. We haven't had a REAL tree in years...like perhaps 9 years? So, I shall walk you through the tree cutting experience.
When we first arrived at the farm, we walked over to a man who reminded me a lot of Dwight Shrute (beet farmer Dwight, not office Dwight). He gathered all the new-comers around and explained the difference between the three breeds of trees they have on the farm. I didn't really listen. While he talked, we all huddled around the fire.

It was quite warm, and very nice in 20 degree weather. Petey was a bit freaked out by it, but I'd much rather have him keep his distance than be reckless around the fire. After a few minutes of warming by the fire, we loaded up on the hayride and caught a ride up to the Christmas trees.
We picked up a pvc pole, used as a measuring stick, and a saw and went in search of our perfect tree. Initially, we thought every tree we saw was "The" tree for us. Soon, though, we realized we wanted to look at all three types of trees. We ended up going for a tree at the top of a hill, so we had a bit of a hike. That made it even more fun, to feel like we really searched for our tree :)
Finally, we found the tree. We knew it was meant for us...

Chris cut it down, Bonnie held the top and I took pictures. But don't worry, I wasn't completely useless. Who do you think carried the tree down the hill? That's right, I did! Ok, I admit, Bonnie helped.

We warmed ourselves by another fire barrel while we waited for the hay ride to return. After a glass of hot apple cider we tied our tree to the top of the van (which does not have a luggage rack, btw.) Chris used his Boy Scout skillz to secure the tree to the roof. I even tied I few square knots myself. Girls Scouts are useful too! The tree did slide to one side on the way home, but it never fell off the roof and we made it home just fine. When we arrived home I forgot that my door was tied shut via the tree, and I began bashing against my door (I thought it was frozen shut for some dumb reason). Everyone loudly reminded me that my door was not going to open, duh!
We now have the tree up and decorated. It was such fun, truly a memorable experience. I had a great time. I think everyone else did too.

(On the girl side: LOVE the jacket, scarf and hair! You look awesome! That jacket is perfect for you and red - you should totally wear red more often. Well, who knows, maybe you do, but that color of cranberry is gorgeous on you!)
