Zack and Petey had their well-child check ups today. Pretty much everything went as is to be expected, just the normal check up stuff. However, it turned out that they were both due for vaccinations. Ack. They dread the idea of getting shots. Just talking about it upsets them. After the doctor finished and left the room, I told the boys the news: they were getting two shots each. Tension began crackling through the air like static electricity. Complaining, whining, bargaining and pleading immediately commenced.

Once the nurse came in, I decided Petey would go first. He got on the table without much problems, but he was already beginning to cry. Loudly. These aren't little boys. If they had absolutely decided that they were not going to get these shots, we wouldn't have been able to make them. I guess luckily they still listen to me when I tell them they "have" to do something. So, the nurse took aim and started with the first shot. Petey screamed bloody murder and pulled away. The shot was out of his arm and she had to jab him again! He was wailing his head off, and Zack, who was sitting on the sidelines watching looked horrified. We finally finished up with Petey and it was time to tackle Zack.

Zack began getting a bit hysterical. This has been an aspect of his personality since he was a child. He gets himself very worked up. We got him up onto the table, but he was already crying, yelling and trying to get away. This kid is almost 80 lbs. We wear the same size shoe for goodness sake! I did my best to hold him in place and the nurse came in with the shot. His yelling started to reach an unbearable level as the needle approached his arm. Zack: "Ahhhhhhh! No, no, no! Oh...." Once the shot actually went into his arm, he totally calmed down! It didn't hurt him :) It was the funniest thing I've seen in days. I still bust out into giggles when I think about it.

immunizations

I'm sorry Petey and Zach had such problems at the doctor's office. Their grandfather had to be 'tricked' into going for shots when he was 4. The drugstore was next to the doctors office. I was told I was going to get and ice cream cone. The next thing I knew I was in an antiseptic smelling office facing a needle-wielding nurse. I scampered under the steel dressing table and locked my arms and feet. The doctor , nurse and my mother couldn't physically remove me. I was also really incensed at being betrayed in this way by my mother. She didn't exactly lie. I did go to the drug store and get an ice cream cone but that was ruse I fell for. My Grandaddy Reynolds had to be called to the doctor's office. Dr. Reynolds was a man who spoke with such authority that even the animals obeyed him ( he was a Vet.) He said to me " Come out from under there, boy!" With that I came out immediately and took the shots, which I suppose seemed to me to be the lessor of the two risky alternatives.

I had to buy them a prize, too. We didn't go for ice cream, but we had to swing by Wal-Mart and buy them compensation for having to undergo such an ordeal :) I'm glad they weren't as determined as you were! I have no idea how I would have gotten them out from under a table :)

I my case I think it was the fact that I was told that we were just 'going to the drug store for an ice-cream cone' , which we did first but then I found out that this was the strategy to get me into the doctor's office next door. I was as much upset and even angered by the trick as I was afraid of the needle. It was a double blow. I went whacko! I didn't even have time to bargain or to protest. Perhaps they will do better the next time. I recall that Chris could put up a formidable protest when he wanted to.

Yeah, I'm a firm believer in not tricking kids. The boys had asked me beforehand if they would get shots, and I truthfully told them that I didn't know. I was just as surprised as they were that they needed them, as I thought we were current on our immunizations. It's a dirty trick to lure a kid to a shot with an ice cream cone! Don't tell Granny I said that!! :)

I bet it was the adrenaline that kept him from feeling it.
