Chris just told me that he has a colleague in his office who has never watched Star Wars. She said she tried to watch it once but it was too boring. The ultimate irony? Her field of study is Medieval history, which many people would argue is much more "boring" than Star Wars could ever be.

Right now Chris is watching "Army of Darkness" on tv. We were trying to decide if this qualifies as science fiction or not. He argues yes because of the time vortex that gets him there in the first place. I argue no, that it is a fantasy. Anyway, the point of the discussion is because I have to write a paper on the definition of science fiction. I'd love to here the opinions of my livejournal friends. How do you define "science fiction"?

Zack got his Bobcat tonight. I'd forgotten that as his mom, I am given a small pin every time he advances up the Boy Scout ladder. As part of the ceremony, Zack was suppose to pin my Bobcat pin to my shirt. I was nervous as I had a little bit of doubt in his ability to pin my shirt and not my skin. He got the pin into my shirt ok, but then came the time to put the back onto it. He dropped the back down my shirt...right there in front of the whole group. Luckily, I caught it before it went all the way down but I had to reach down my shirt and retrieve it. There was no way to deal with this gracefully, as the Cub Scout Master let loose a shriek of laughter. She certainly enjoyed the whole thing. A few seconds later I had found the back to the pin and Zack put it on with no further problems. Next time, I'm wearing a shirt with a collar he can pin it to :) Just think, if all the boys do Boy Scouts, I could have a plethora of pins by the end of our scouting years.

Is it me, or has LJ been dead today? Are you guys all playing Halo 3 or what? I'm lonely here in Spokane with no real friends! I need my virtual friends:)

Wow, it does seem ironic that his colleague hasn't seen Star Wars.

Well since I've never seen "Army of Darkness", I really can't help you there. I asked my husband and he says it is fantasy/horror. However, I see anything that isn't possible to do now with our current science as science fiction. My favorite series(Acorna by Anne McCaffrey) is science fiction/ fantasy since there are obviously no people like them really(it's about a girl who looks a lot like a unicorn) and it's science fiction because we do not have space travel knowledge currently and other things that are in the story. We were also talking about it and we have come the the conclusion that most science fiction and fantasy books are intertwined in some way. Either a fantasy with some science fiction or science fiction with some fantasy mixed in. That is why in libraries and bookstores they are usually mixed together. Anyway, I hope that helps you.

Lol that would be neat if all your boys got you pinned. :)

Oh well I better go if I'm taking Zeke to story time this morning. I'll try to post later. I know I've been kinda sparse lately but a lot of my other lj friends are too.

I LOVE Army of Darkness, it's such a silly movie. I think, to classify this movie, it's good to know what it's two predecessors are considered. Evil Dead I and II are both classified as horror. And they are gory movies, but hilarious in that same silly way as Army of Darkness. Both have the vortex thingy in them as well. Bruce Campbell does some amazing acting in the scene in which he chops off his hand (it gets possessed). These movies are some of my favorite movies. Silly, scary, TONS of really bad fake blood. I'd have to say that Army of Darkness though is a mixture of all genres: Horror because it's the third movie in a trilogy (although Evil Dead II is really just a retelling of Evil Dead I, almost line by line), Sci-fi because of the vortex, and fantasy because of all the wizard/witch/medieval things. What did you think of it?

Clatu Verata Neck(*&)&%&%^%$&&*

How has anyone not seen Star Wars?

The pin story is kind of funny, but I laughed when I read that the pin back fell down your shirt. Funny in one of those not harmful Murphy's Law kind of ways.

No Halo 3 for me, not yet. Too expensive.

Sometimes there is a good, dividing line between science fiction and fantasy, served up with a shopping scoop of grey area in between. Typically I look at science fiction as involving a large helping of technology, that is fantastical based, to move the story along. I look as fantasy as involving things that would be mystical or magical in nature, that create the fantastical elements. I would say that AOD has a stronger foothold in fantasy, as the reason he gets sucked back in time is more magical than it is technological. While Ash does use modern tech while in the medieval period, that doesn't really qualify it for science fiction. I think you can have plenty of crossover within the two genres, but generally I think you would want to examine the use of tech to base your definition of science fiction in, and magical devices or elements to show fantasy.
