Feb. 24th, 2007 03:01 amIt is now 3 a.m. Petey just puked in bed. His bed is right next to Zack's and he missed Zack's head by just about 5 inches. Now that would have been a catastrophe! As it is, it seems there is mess everywhere. Poor Petey. Of course, in true Petey fashion, after he'd been cleaned up, redressed and tucked back into a clean bed, he asked me to explain to him why our bodies throw up in the first place. In a weird sort of way, I'm glad I was sick with the same thing only two days ago. I'm now able to be empathetic to him in a way I previously would have been unable to be. Poor guy, he didn't seem sick at all earlier tonight. On the way home from dinner tonight, he said his stomach hurt really bad so we pulled over at a public bathroom. However, it was the grossest thing I've ever seen and Petey was unable to use it. I won't even try to describe it here. Even as I was telling Mariannette about the restroom she said "TMI, Tina, TMI!"
I wonder if any of the other boys will get it. I hope not. So, while I'm up and writing, I may as well tell you about tonight's dinner experience. We went to a theme restuarant. And what was the theme, you may ask? The whole thing was based around The Red Guard. What, you don't know anything about the Red Guard and the Cultural Revolution? Well, it's time for your monthly Chinese history lesson. Take a moment and look it up on Wikipedia. Done? ok, good.
I was very conflicted about going to this restuarant. The Red Guard was a horrible institution, one of Mao's very biggest mistakes. They persecuted intellectuals, destroyed valuable cultural relics, temples, gardens, anything at all that was beautiful. So, was patorinizing a place that celebrated these things right? Or, did the place make fun of the Red Guard? We had no idea before we went and truly we still have no idea. There was a show in which young actors marched around and sang Red Guard songs from back in the day. The audience often sang with them but on the other hand there was a lot of laughing going on, as if there were jokes being made. Even the Chinese speakers at our tables couldn't understand most of what was being said, as it was so distorted by the loud PA system.
As for the food, it was good. I tried several new things tonight that I had previously avoided, principally rabbit and eel. Not bad. I also had frog and taro root.
I'm half way tempted to try and describe that bathroom....but I wouldn't want to give you all nightmares :)
