1. What’s your favorite Chinese food/dish?
Hmm, how can I pick just one!? Given a menu of authentic Chinese food to choose from, I always go for the dumplings (known as pot stickers in the US). And if they are steam-fried, all the better! Of course it is a given that real Chinese dumplings are worlds better than most that are found in the States.
2. What’s your all time favorite book and why?
Pride and Prejudice. I know, I know. This book has been redone and remade into every possible genre, but for me, it will always hold a certain level of magic. I’ve read it multiple times, which is rare for me. I generally hold to the philosophy that there are just too many good books out there to spend time rereading things I’ve already read. Not so with Pride and Prejudice. Every time I read it, I laugh out loud, I cry. Jane Austen was just such an amazing writer. I suppose this is why I constantly read the P&P spin-offs, which are of course always disappointments.
3. Do you know how cold it gets in Massachusetts? (i.e. if you could live anywhere in the the US where would you want to live?)
I’ve been purposefully trying not to think about how cold it gets in Massachusetts. At this moment it is 37 degrees there. I really loved living in Spokane and DC. I like bigger cities because I like the better library system, cultural events and parks.
4. Kirk or Spock? What’s your favorite episode of Star Trek and have you ever been to a convention?
Spock! My user name on some forums in VulcanGirl:) Voyager will always hold a special place in my heart because that is the show that first got me interested in Star Trek. My favorite episode has to be the one where the Doctor downloads into Seven of Nine’s borg implants and gets to experience human sensations for the first time. Classic! No, I’ve never been to a convention but I’d love to some day. It’s one of those things that falls under the category of “once we settle down…”
5. Do you really think video games are good for improving literacy skills? Would you be willing to write a dissertation on the topic / would you ever consider getting another degree after the current one?
Yes, I do believe video games are good for improving literacy skills. I should clarify and say that by “literacy” I am not talking only about the ability to interpret written text. I believe that in our day, literacy means much, much more. Literacy is ability to understand text, visual clues, sounds, smells, graphs, colors, etc. Another aspect of literacy that we should take into consideration for today’s children is the ability to navigate digital information. Video games teach multitasking as well as the skills to interpret text, visual and sound clues. I wouldn’t mind researching the issue further, especially for how video games can help children with ADHD, Autism or learning disabilities. I probably will get another degree in the future, but only when/if I can get it for free, either through my employer or Chris’. No more paying for school for this vulcangirl!
