I consider fasting a personal matter, not one to be casually discussed or "bragged" about. When I hear people talk in church about the fact that they've fasted for 24 (or more) hours, it feels a bit disingenuous. Fasting is an important part of the LDS religion and it is expected that members will fast on a monthly basis for the length of two meals. During that time, no food or drink (including water) should be consumed. Members are encouraged to donate the money they save by not eating to the church welfare program.

I've personally had some amazing experiences through fasting. It is very difficult for me to follow through with, probably one of the most challenging religious rituals that I practice. However, when I do it, I always feel much better and certainly more at peace.

Anything one brags they do for spiritual purposes is wrong and, as you know, it's referenced in Matthew of how one should do things in secret and not make their deeds known to the public.

I do like the idea of donating the money to the church. Do all LDS churches have this kind of fund?

Yes, it is a church-wide fund. The money is used to help members of the church who are having a hard time making ends meet. The bishop of each congregation can use his discretion to decide how to help needy families, such as with groceries or paying utilities. Money is never directly given to a family, but the bishop will write a check to the gas company on the family's behalf, for example. I think it is a wonderful program!!

Excellent post! I so agree about the personal aspect. It's like an intimacy. I cherish the (few) opportunities I've taken advantage of to fast. The memories of the things that happened touch my heart.
