I find it ironic how much respect the title "college professor" seems to demand. When searching for a house, I can always hear the difference in the tone of voice of whomever I'm speaking to when I say "My husband will be a visiting professor at the College of Idaho." They switch from indifferent to highly interested. Somehow, the idea of college professor equals extremely-responsible-renter in the minds of real estate gurus. Having been college students not too long ago, I'm amazed at the stark contrast between the two reactions. The funny thing is, that in Chris' case, he really still is a college student. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. Professors may not earn the big bucks, but if it gets us into a nice home with minimum hassle, then bring on the respect :)

We move in exactly two weeks from today. Isn't it sad that I already feel like tossing things in boxes haphazardly. I've about had it with trying to make this an organized move. Also, I've been thinking that when we move I may just leave many, many things still in the boxes. Why bother unpacking the scrapbooks and journals? We'll be moving again in a year, right?

It's because you say "Husband" and "Professor". Then they get this picture of a bearded man in a mock turtleneck, in a tweed jacket, smoking a pipe, driving a 1965 Porsche. He smiles, and brings with him a beaten checkbook, in which he writes out wonderfully big checks.

When of course the reality is a guy in skate shoes, ragged jeans and 4 days worth of unshaven-ness writing a check funded by money of questionable origin....

Well, "questionable origin" sounds better than "money borrowed from parents...yet again".

Hehe, this made me giggle. We've got so many faculty here in the art department that are often mistaken for students themselves. Some are even younger than me.

When you're a student, you think professor = big bucks. When you work on the other side of the university, you realize that professor = struggling to make ends meet, while publishing their butts off, for 7 years until you gain tenure and maybe make a reasonable salary. It's only the ones who've been at the university for like 30 years make the kind of salary students think professors make.

So true, so true. It's such a tough, bizarre career path. Why do people choose it?!

Although I'm sure he'd love the Porsche aspect of the image.
