"I love my jeep. It just saved my life." These were Chris' first words upon walking in the door yesterday after work.

Because of all the snow, the city snow plows are far behind in getting the roads cleared. Normally, the main arterials are cleared right away. As of yet, the main road closest to our house has not been cleared since before Sunday. We've had three snowfalls since then. This is why school hasn't been reopened yet because the buses cannot transverse the roads.

On to Chris' story: On his way home from work he was almost hit by a van. This van was rounding a curve coming towards Chris. It was moving slowly, but with all the snow on the road it started to lose control. It spun around and began sliding across all four lanes towards him. He said he thought "if I hit the brakes, I'll lose control. I'm going to have to gun it!" So he did (what quick wits my hubby has. If that had been me, I would have totally slammed on the brakes and had horrific wreck.) He missed being hit by the van by a fraction of an inch and ended driving up on the snow bank as he sped away. If he hadn't been in his jeep (which he always keeps in 4 wheel drive these days), none of that wouldn't have been possible. Virtually any other car wouldn't have been able to speed away that quickly nor would have been able to drive on the snow bank. It was obvious that his adrenaline was still pumping from the experience even though it had been several minutes by the time he got home.

I haven't really been doing any driving since the major snow storm hit. I haven't driven in 4 days :) They've officially announced that there will be no school for the rest of the week. I need to come up with some fun ideas for the kids to do tomorrow. I'm thinking some sort of Groundhog's Day activities. Of course, fostering some sort of hope/belief in an early spring due to the groundhog seeing its shadow might be a mistake. The boys, particularly Zack, are really bummed by this weather. Zack feels like this snow and cold weather is a personal torture set against him by some sort of conspiracy. When he grows up, I see him living in tropical weather all year round.

Well, you wanted snow didn't you? Well did you?? LOL " So days went on, a week had passed since the great world was heard from last." John Greenleaf Whittier, SNOWBOUND When I read it years ago it was a long, boring poem . Whittier's excellent imagery was entirely lost on me. I could not see how the experience of being snowbound would, in any way, be pleasant, spiritual and even a metaphysical . Of course I was a boy. I lived in Florida and snow was quite a rare occurrence. Bill

Do you know that almost ALL of west tennessee schools are closed today for pretty much nothing? The reason my county is closed is because "some bridges MAY have ice but the main roads are clear".

I'm not complaining though....gives me a good excuse to stay home! =)

Now that's the kind of "snow" day I would like. You get the day off, but you can still go out and about. As it is now, we are virtually trapped in the house.

When I was growing up in Alabama, the whole city would shut down if we even got the lightest dusting of snow. This is so different from that!

YAY for the Jeep and Chris' superhero instincts!

omg...back in 1994 there was a terrible rainstorm that hit Ft. Rucker bad enough that Lake Tholoco levee broke and flooded the road leading from Ft. Rucker out to Ozark. Anyway, I couldn't get off base and my parents were driving me nuts and I just wanted to be with Mike. I felt the same way as Zack does about the snow. I hate that trapped feeling.
