We went sledding yesterday afternoon down a rather largish hill. It was all fun and games until I tried to take on the hill. I watched for quite a while, but it started to look so fun that I decided I just had to give it a try. As I started down the hill, I began picking up speed and fast! Suddenly, I realized I had no way of steering this round disk I had entrusted my life to...and I was headed straight towards a group of kids. I leaned trying to go in a different direction and I succeeded in careening towards the kids even faster. Suddenly I spun around backwards so I had no idea if I was going to hit them or not. I simply had to brace for impact.
Now that I was facing the opposite direction, I could see that Zack was following almost directly in my path. I rushed past the kids, grazing one of them but not bashing into any too badly. I spun back around in the other direction, once again facing the bottom of the hill. I had a brief moment to wonder if Zack had knocked over anyone as I finally came to a stop. Now that the wind wasn't rushing in my ears, I could hear that someone was crying and quite loudly.
It was Petey. Zack had plowed him over and he'd landed face first in the snow. As much as Petey loves the snow, he gets quite upset when it gets on his face. He was holding his mouth open, and I wondered if he'd split his lip. I'm still at the bottom of the hill, struggling to climb my way back up to where they are. Once I get there, I realize Petey is physically ok, just really upset by the whole ordeal. Chris starts to walk Petey to the car to get warmed up, but on his way past me he asks if I'll take Josh down the hill one last time.
Ok, sure. Why not?
This time, I don't start from the top of the hill. I start from where we are, about the half-way point. We move away from the group of people, doing our best to avoid hitting anyone. By this point, it has gotten pretty dark outside, but I can still see pretty well (or so I think) because of the moon's reflection on the snow.
Now, you may be thinking that I should have learned my lesson the first time down, right? Not so, I'm afraid. Josh's sled is much easier to steer, so I was successful in making us go in the direction I intended. However, once we reached the bottom of the hill, we didn't stop right away and we were headed towards what, in the dark, looked like rocks. I put out my feet and tried to stop us. All I succeeded in doing was spraying snow into Josh and I's faces, and up my pants leg. Ack. We went into the "rocks" which thankfully turned out to be weeds. Through the weeds, and down another little hill, and finally we came to a stop. Josh thought it was the greatest thing ever!
It was fun, I won't deny that. Good memories were created. Yet, I can't help but feel a bit traumatized by the whole event. I guess I'm just too old/big to sled anymore :)
Josh is staying home from school today with a low-grade fever. I hope it's nothing, but I suspect this may be last weeks cold returning in the form of an infection. If he's still running a fever tomorrow I'll probably take him to the Doc. Happenings like this make me worry about leaving to visit Melissa.
