I just got my sci fi definition essay back. I made a C+. This is the first C I've made in probably 8 years!!!

I'm jonesing out over here. I'm convinced that she changed the terms of the assignment after she turned it back to us. In her email she states "Most of those which received a grade of C did so for the same reason: The paper lacked critical engagement with the question: What qualifies SF as literature?" I thought we were writing a definition. That's what the assignment said. Ack!!!

Thankfully, she has given us a couple days to do a rewrite. The irony here? Chris read over this paper and even tweaked it a bit. He assured me that I was getting an A on it! I suppose the expectations of an English professor vs. a history professor are very different. Next time I'm emailing it to my dad!! (Although, he jokingly told me the other day that sci-fi's rightful place in the literary world was on the dime-store rack, lol!)

This really rattles my confidence.

Do you have the original assignment? You could have a case. The email sounds weird - all those that received a C...makes me wonder just how many other students did the same thing you did and if she didn't change the assignment after all. It's definitely worrysome.

I have a story to share with you about this, but I'll email you about it later.

Chris thinks I should argue the case with her. I think I will email her. Usually, we can see what the class average is in our online grade book. However, this teacher has opted not to use the grade book (none of my teachers in the past 4 years that I've been attending UIS have ever done that before!) so I have no way of knowing how low the grading curve actually was.

I'll look for your story.

I tweaked and corrected a paper Shuzhen turned in which I thought she'd get a B on. She ended up getting a D+. I thought it was totally uncalled for. The teacher's response was "Not enough critical thinking. This is a descriptive paper!". It sounds like just like a convenient way for a teacher to say "You didn't come the conclusions or discuss what I think personally".

That is exactly what Chris said too!
