I felt awkward at church today. I know a large part of it was due to my outburst two weeks ago, but I think I'm also holding back because I know we'll only be here for ten months. I don't want to settle in and get emotionally invested in friends that I'll be moving away from once again. But, on the other hand, I don't like feeling that way. I wish I could just will myself to buck up and jump in to the friendship-making mode.

I'm reading "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury this week for my sci-fi class. Has anyone else read that? Thoughts?

I read it for the first time when I was living in Utah, year before last. I remember the foreword had something about how Ray Bradbury wrote it on these type-wrtiers at the library that cost a nickle for 15 minutes or something. He said he had to write it really fast because of that. Also I read that he still maintains that the book is not actually about censorship but rather about the evolution of media or something.
I am reading The Good Earth now to prepare for my trip to China.

The Good Earth is one of my favorite books. I'm not sure how much it will prepare you for today's China, though. I read several books in attempt to prepare for my trip and none of them seemed relevant once I got there. China is changing so fast. It's an amazing place, I'm sure you'll love it there.

A few of my other favorite China books are:

Wild Swans
Dragon Village
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

While we were in Nanjing I visited a house where Pearl Buck had lived while teaching at the University there. It wasn't easy to find, and certainly not a popular tourist spot. It's currently being used as an administrator's office.

I never read 451. I think I tried watching the movie but it was soooo 1960s (I know, wasn't the book written at that time?) and you know the acting from the 60s is nowhere near as good as a book written in that era. I couldn't get through it. Guess I should read the book!
