just another day in the life

I may not have a digital camera, but I do still have my camera phone. I know the pictures aren't great quality, but it's better than nothing, right? There's also a puppy pic at the end.
Papa John's Pizza has just opened up in Nanjing!!

They even deliver and here are the shiny new delivery bikes. They don't even look as if they've been used yet.

We had to wait in line for about 20 minutes before we were seated. This wasn't unexpected, as there is always a long line outside of Pizza Hut as well.

As luck would have it, we ended up being seated right next to the window. I let the boys play their Gameboys while we waited for the pizza to come. Our waitress was very surprised that we ordered two pizzas. She asked us twice if we really wanted two (we wanted leftovers.) We were very pleased to see that we had the option of creating our own pizza. In other words, most places that we've eaten at in China do not allow you to specialize your order. You may order only what's on the menu. I'm glad to see that Papa John's has kept that aspect of it's business in China. Of course, just like Pizza Hut, the restuarant was much, much nicer than any Papa John's I've been to in the states. Connor and Petey couldn't get enough of the butter-garlic dip, lol.

After pizza, we took the kids to an indoor playground that was nearby. This pic is my attempt to photograph a baby in split pants and a diaper. The strange things is that they don't attach the diaper with the provided tabs. They tie it loosely around somehow, so it's almost on the outside of the split pants. Maybe that's just for while the baby is playing inside, or because it's so cold right now?

Our next stop after the playground was to the Confucian temple. We were planning on meeting up with the rest of the faculty and students for dinner in that area of town. We decided to take the subway, which turned out to be a great idea. By taxi, it takes about 20 minutes to get from where we were to the temple. By subway it took about 5. It was a bit crowded, but not bad. When we rode the Beijing subway once it was like sardines. This wasn't bad at all. On with the story: as we were walking towards the temple from the subway station, we were walking down streets that we'd never been on before. We walked past what was obviously a touristy spot, so Chris stopped to ask what it was. It turned out to be a beautiful garden. It continues to amaze me that such wonderful things are in town and I have no idea they exsist, right there! The garden was so fun for the boys because it had steps, caves and bridges built everywhere and we were free to explore as we pleased. Also, it was not crowded at all since the weather was a bit cold. On the down side, as Petey and I were running through a darkish hallway, I missed a step and twisted my ankle. I fell down. I'm glad no one saw it but Petey, and he laughed (I'm sure I looked pretty funny collapsing like that.) I have a slight bruise on the top of my foot, but I'm sure I'll be fine in a couple days. It's fine to walk on.
While I'm typing this, the boys are watching Star Wars 3. Petey started singing "You give Yoda a piggy back ride, I'll give Yoda a piggy back ride, Everybody give Yoda a piggy back ride."

Dinner was a 20 course meal. Each person at the table was served a small dish containing each course. I hadn't expected this, as usually it is the communal dishes in the center of the table that everyone eats out of. This is why I'd ordered extra pizza, for the boys to eat at dinner. If we had a communal meal, the boys wouldn't be wasting food. As it turns out, they didn't touch any of their chinese food and it just all piled up in front of them. The waitress didn't care if they wanted it or not. It was there job to put it on the table and they did it.
The boys all fell asleep in the car. We wore them out :) I was worried about Josie being home alone for so long, but she seemed to do fine. She's such a good pup. She stopped whining on her third night. I was sure it would last longer than that. She's never poo'd in the house, except in the spare shower which we've designated as her potty area. The boys are so in love with her. So am I :)

Date: 2007-01-21 03:35 pm (UTC)I see you are back to super-star status. I'm serious about you having a hand written sign that you can show people, "Please leave my children alone. You are scaring them." that you can carry around with you and show to people.
Josie looks adorable!!! She kind of looks like an Ewok baby. You can tell the boys that they have a real piece of Star Wars right there.

Date: 2007-01-24 12:01 am (UTC)I think if we were to carry around a sign like that, people would laugh and gawk even more. This is what happens to Petey when he tells people "Don't do that". They laugh and ask him to say it again.
She does look like an ewok doesn't she!? We love her.
