This is a pic that I snapped a couple weeks ago as the boys and I were out for a walk. It was the first day we'd been out in almost a week. We had rain for a week and a half straight. It was miserable. For us, coming from sunny Arizona, the winter weather here is taking some getting used to. It's so cold here. The high today was 50, the low 43. Also, it's a damp cold. It's so damp here that we constantly have condensation on the inside of our windows. We can't leave anything on the window seats or it will get soggy.

So, how do people combat this vicious cold? Not that 50 is vicious, but it will only get colder as winter progresses. They wear layer upon layer of clothing. For example, this is what Zou had on today: a very thick coat, a sweater, a vest, and her long underwear shirt. The irony is that she always turns of the heater when she gets here. One day she even opened all the windows. I think she was trying to air the house out from our funny "foreigner" smell. Another time, when we came home we found that she had taken off her jeans and was walking around the house in only her longjohns. They were bright purple. She didn't act embarressed for us to see her that way at all. She kept her jeans off until she left, an hour later.

I've also noticed a few other "winter wear" items that I've never seen before. One of them is a face mask made of thermal cloth, like a surgical face mask. People wear them mostly when they ride their bikes. What a great idea! I want to get one. I hate having a cold nose. Also, I saw a man wearing ear mittens. They were these two little pocket things just perfect for the shape of his ears and they were connected by a string between them. I've also noticed a lot of women who wear extra sleeves. I'm not sure what purpose they serve. They are like a tube of fabric with elastic at each end. Perhaps they are to keep coat sleeves clean? I usually notice women wearing them at work.

Gotta go. Chris wants to watch another episode of Prison Break. We love that show now.

lol, I know, we're wimps. I've thought of your beautiful Russian style hat with envy on a few frigid days. I think I need to pile on more layers. The boys don't have any long underwear so today I made them wear their pajamas underneath their regular clothes. They thought that was cool. We really need to get them some proper winter wear :)

I have no idea if the pic is Sumak. My ignorance is shining through!
