I had the most bizarre experience last night. I think what made it seem so bizarre is that I showed up expecting one experience and having a totally different one. I went to my nephew's Christmas chorus concert...or so I thought. I turned out to be a male pagaent at which the chorus was singing a song.

I'm not a believer in beauty pagaents. Maybe it is living in the South for so long and seeing how the moms and girls can get so very wrapped up in the hoopla. But really, I just don't believe in judging a person (or a book!) by her/his/its outside appearances. Now, the Most Striking Viking pagaent that I attended last night did have a significant talent portion. And wow, I was pretty amazed at how talented these kids were, and how un-shy they were to share their talents with their peers. Most of them sang, and sang really well, while they played an instrument. Two danced and one did yo-yo tricks. We voted for the yo-yo tricks because that's the one my kids liked the best (the audience picked most talented). I was also impressed that when any of the guys messed up--even the obviously less popular of the group--the audience cheered them on and encouraged them to continue, giving them a much needed boost of confidence. There was no laughing or jeering. That was so awesome.

We left at the intermission because Zack had a headache, it was closing in on bedtime and the kids were whining for food. All that loud cheering for the contestants was too much for Zack. He often gets sensory overload in such situations and he was sitting there with his hands over his ears for most of the time, poor guy.

I didn't even get to hear my nephew sing because we left before the performance. Like I said, it was an odd night.
