Percy Jackson is a misfit kid who can never seem to behave in school. He has both dyslexia and ADHD and trouble seems to follow him no matter where he goes. Turns out the reason he is always getting in trouble is because he is half god (Roman or Greek, it's the same in the book) and half human. As a half-blood god, monsters are constantly seeking him out to challenge him to battle or to try and destroy him at the bidding of another god. Life is very exciting for the child of a god!
This book is an easy read and I flew right through it. I liked learning more about Greek/Roman mythology. It's always enjoyable to find a unique story and this is very unique. I also like that the hero, indeed all the heroes, have ADHD and dyslexia due to their god-like characteristics. It's refreshing to see these two disabilities portrayed as a good thing.
Book one, the Lightening Thief, is mainly about Percy discovering that he is the child of a god, coming to terms with it and completing his first quest. It's very fast paced. I plan to read it to my kids and I think they'll really like it.
