I'm realizing some things about living in a farm community that I hadn't considered beforehand:

*smell-o-vision! On Sunday evening the weather was cool enough to turn off the tv and open the windows. As soon as I'd opened all the windows and settled down to read, I realized the whole house was taking on a different smell. I closed the windows back up and turned the AC on again. It wasn't really a bad smell, just not a comfortable one.

*The women are quite resourceful, at least the ones I've met through church. They are canning gurus! Last night we had a canning class at church and these women can anything they can get their hands on. They know the hook up for getting free potatoes, onions, corn, peaches and apples. Once they've picked all they can, they have a marathon canning session. There was a funny moment last night, although only I knew it, that some of you Southern women can appreciate: A church lady held up a jar she'd canned and asked if anyone knew what it was. I recognized it immediately and said "Is it ambrosia?" She shook her head and said, "No. It's grapefruit, pineapple, mandarin oranges and maraschino cherries!" Ooooh. That's totally different :)

*Because Caldwell is a lower-income community, people aren't shy or embarrassed to take advantage of programs that benefit low income families. For example, all throughout Idaho all summer long, there is free lunch in the park for kids. They did this in Spokane at area elementary schools, but I never took advantage of it because I figured that it was more to benefit those who normally get free lunches during the school year. When I first heard about this free lunch in the park, I thought it was the same sort of thing. However, I've had three separate church women tell me about park lunches, and encourage me to go.

I found several videos on youtube posted by Caldwellians. This one, while not the best quality or all that interesting in subject matter, is funny for the background conversation. It's hard to imagine a person whose never heard of youtube...
