lets burn all the money! problem solved
Sep. 30th, 2007 07:46 amPetey's birthday was a great success. The kids are now in love with "UB Funkeys", which it turns out, it something between Sims and Neopets. We also gave Pete a Razor scooter and he's been having lots of fun with that. Yesterday afternoon Chris got out his skateboard and went outside with Petey to give him a riding lesson. It is starting to become obvious that Petey is naturally athletic. He was very proud of himself on the day they played flag football at school and he was the last one with a flag.
Right now the kids are playing "take cover log", whatever that is. I'm glad they are such good friends with each other. It means a lot to me that they are each others' best friends. Maybe we can move to China in the future whenever our family starts to drift apart, lol.
Speaking of that, Chris and I are finally coming to the realization that our moving back and forth to China, to Florida, to Washington has really screwed us over financially. We can make it, we have enough money, but it is JUST enough. It's hard to realize we have not a bit of breathing room with the finances. We sat down to pay bills yesterday and afterwards we were both grumpy and depressed. Ah well. I'll just have to accept that this is the next phase in our lives and learn to deal with it. It sucks only getting paid once a month. We've never had to deal with that before and it takes a lot of self control, which isn't one of my strong points.
So, in attempt to make our money go further I wrote out a menu for the upcoming week. Next, I made a grocery list of exactly the ingredients we needed for these meals. I figure if I can get all the groceries at once on Wal-mart shopping trip, I'll save money in more ways than one. I won't be making small trips all week, which will save gas and impulse buys. In an attempt to save time, Chris and I split the list in half. I even organized the list by department, so we wouldn't have to wander around the store criss crossing each others' paths but just get the shopping done quickly and efficiently. Turns out this is not the best way for us to do a shopping trip. First, I finished my list way before him. If I happened to run into him in the aisles, he'd have a question or two to ask about what exactly I wanted. He gave me his list to do after I finished mine. Second, we ended up spending way more money because we weren't together to restrain each other. In other words, we both picked up boxes of treats along the way sometimes duplicating each others' choices. Ah well, even if we spent more than usual we will eat everything so I guess it's all good in the end.
I finished reading "Fahrenheit 451". It left a big impression on me, and I find myself wanting to limit the kids screen time and make them sit down and read instead. I suppose this was one of the author's objectives, and if so, he succeeded with me. Also, it is clear that this book was written smack dab at the height of the Cold War. It has all sorts of Cold War influences, which I found really interesting. All in all, I'm very glad I read it. This is a book that will stay with me for a long time.
