We had a busy, busy day today getting ready to move. We bought a mattress set and a bed (our first real bed...up until now we've just had a frame) and a table with 5 chairs. The table was in the scratch and dent section, but we just love it. It's black and taller than a traditional table. It also has a leaf in the middle that folds out, making the table square. The chairs are also tall. I might want to get the chair seats recovered someday, but we'll see. Also, we bought an off-white shag area rug for our bedroom. The bedroom floors in the house are made of maple, which is a very soft wood. We certainly don't want to scratch up the floors, so we're going to use a lot of area rugs. I know from experience, when we were in China, that we do tend to scratch up floors :( I'll do my best to prevent it!

I take Chris to the airport first thing in the morning and get the house keys directly afterwards. Also, all our stuff from China has arrived. Chris said the boxes look very mangled. I hope our dishes and art work didn't break. Mariannette shipped it for us from China directly to the history department here. We thought it would be much easier to have it sent straight here rather than to Florida and then shipped again. As it is we have about 10 boxes still in Florida to be shipped. Our stuff is just all over the country. Tonight Chris asked me if I remembered the computer desk he bought me right before we left for China. I honestly have no memory of it. It's so bizarre to think that I own furniture that I cannot recall!

Petey is really disappointed that he can't go with Chris to Tucson. He's particularly upset that Chris will be seeing Gwen and family and Petey will be left out. I hope they make new friends soon. They need to find some reasons for enjoying living here.

I've just discovered that the Science Fiction Hall of Fame is in Seattle. Coolness. Only a half day drives away!

We're in our house and someone nearby has a wireless connection. yay! Don't despair, we shall get our own connection soon enough :)

Now I shall take photos to show the house!

Moving day

The boys and have been running errands all afternoon. I found some mattresses for them, so no one will be sleeping on the floor tonight :) Chris made it to Tucson safely and went straight away to Eggies for a pina colada smoothie. Mmmm, I'm jealous. I got a bit lost on the way home from Target. I thought I knew where I was, but I got all turned around and literally drove in a circle, ending up back where I started 5 minutes earlier. Whoops. I'll learn my way around soon enough.

I briefly met a neighbor today. She came over to help me when she saw that I couldn't figure out how to close my screen door (it was propped all the way open and seemed locked that way.) She's probably in her early 60's and seems nice. I've also discovered that we have a beeyuutiful park just five minutes away. I'm going to like here.

The kids go back and forth between loving the basement and being completely freaked out by it. One of the rooms has been done really well into a bedroom, but no one wants to sleep down there. We'll make that a play room/video game room. The room next to it isn't finished, but we can throw down an area rug and make it an office. There are also two other rooms, besides the finished laundry room. The basement is quite huge, making for plenty of storage. One of the rooms used to be the coal room, but thankfully the coal chute has been boarded up. I try to keep the door to this part of the basement closed, as I don't really want the kids exploring the nooks and crannies in there.

...I just heard a really loud banging sound. I think Petey is trying to ride the skateboard down the stairs. I'm inclinded just to stay here typing unless I hear some crying...

Some thoughts on Spokane: It seems everyone here is pretty friendly. People don't hesitate to strike up conversations with me and for the most part they seem genuinely nice. It seems that chin piercings and shoulder (on the back, like over the blade) tattoos are very popular here. I realize piercings and tattoos are popular everywhere in the States (even in rural South Dakota) but those two particular spots seem to be very trendy in Spokane. I would venture to say that in the South, small of the back tattoos are the popular spot.

Chris and I are both afraid that we are just going to love it here, but not be able to stay. Part of me wants to keep my heart guarded so I don't get too attached. After all, we only signed a 10 month lease.

It is so strange to not hear the kids. I love having a playroom in the basement! Perhaps I should go look and make sure they are still in the house... :)
