Lucia, Lucia by Adriana Trigiani
I enjoyed this novel despite the fact that I had a hard time relating to the main character. Lucia is a career girl growing up in New York post WW2. She works in the custom fashion department of an upscale department store and she loves beautiful clothes. The author spends lots of words describing - in detail - various character's outfits, which I found a little tedious. She loves being a career girl and isn't willing to give it up for her traditional Italian fiancé. She later falls in love with an uptown man and finds herself in the middle of a "sizzling scandal" (as the book cover puts it.) I would recommend this book.
I know some people who love nice clothing and styles (
blackie_fox) would appreciate this book much more than I did. I guess I'm more of a comfort girl than a stylish one. Its not that I don't appreciate beautiful clothing, I just don't have the 'eye' for it that Lucia did in the novel. Nowadays, I'm lucky if I can get out of the house in a clean shirt, much less one that is fashionable :)

I even designed my own wedding dress except I never had the guts to ask my parents if I could have a dress made for me instead of getting one from a store. The dress was very "Sense and Sensibility" (the movie) like. High empire waist line long flowing. I love that look. If I could I'd wear dresses like that every day.
Deep inside, although you wouldn't tell on the outside, I am a fashion maven. Everyone must bow to me.

I know this sounds silly, but go to Wal-Mart. I got a beautiful electric blue swimsuit there last year. A one piece with verticle ribbing. It was comfortable and was perfect for the limited use. We didn't have a pool but my mom's hotel did.
Don't get a suit with a skirt attached. If you want something to cover up with get a sarong. Go to one of those bohemian stores and find a nice batiked wrap and wrap that around your waist. Get your suit first so you can do your best to match it up. Spend the money on the wrap, not the suit. Then you'll still look young, funky, and stylish. And most importantly, if you feel self-concious about something the wrap will cover it up.
