At first I felt it was pretty crazy... but after reading the article it makes sense. After all, they did try to serve the papers and they were unable to find any other way of contacting the guy.
I think that's the key thing that people need to focus on here... this is NOT saying that FaceBook is an everyday alternative to personal service; but that it IS a valid way of tracking down a defendant who was otherwise unreachable. And probably a lot cheaper than hiring a process server in another country to track the guy down!
I've heard about marriages breaking up via facebook. One day the wife says she's married and the next day she says she's single and the husband (a prof soccer player) found out she was divorcing him that way. Can you believe it? How childish.
I heard about this all over the news when it happened. From what I understand it is just a secondary protocol after they have tried every available means to contact someone. Previously they had used email to serve people in such cases but since they did not have an email in this case, someone just searched him out on facebook. The Judge did say that if the defendant makes himself available, he would be glad to take into consider any complaint in the manner in which he was served.
Hope Chris is getting better. Pneumonia is pretty bad stuff. Hope the job market is looking up as well for him. And congrats on your A :)
Thanks for the congrats :) It's always nice to hear from you when you pop up on lj. Chris is feeling better but he's certainly not back to himself. He has more energy, but it's quickly expended. I'm trying to make sure he rests as much as possible.
Thanks for the well wishes. Who knows, if he doesn't land a job maybe we'll move back to China. At least we can live there for cheap.
