I have a few comments about nasal habits. I'll put it behind a cut for those who have no desire to hear those thoughts
The clearing of nasal and sinus passages is public business here in China. Of course, I don't mean to generalize with this or any of the comments that I make. I'm not saying that EVERY Chinese person feels comfortable picking their nose or spitting in front of other people. What I am saying is that it's very common. I've pretty much stopped telling the boys not to pick their nose. Is that horrible? I suppose I've taken up the philosophy "when in China...". The first time someone hocked a loogie on the ground right in front of me (I had to dodge not to step on it) I assumed they did it on purpose. I thought they were trying to appall the foreigner (and they succeeded.) I now realize how very arrogant it was of me to assume that some one would spit just for my benefit. No, spitting happens all the time. It is an everyday occurence to hear someone doing that noise. What's the name for that noise, anyway? That throat clearing-getting ready to spit something gross and sticky-noise? I hear it pretty much everywhere we go. Chris has educated me by telling me that this regular spitting is considered healthy and a way of clearing out the body. Good to know, still yucky to see.
Things I wish I had brought with us (and will bring back after our trip home for Christmas):
My Converse or Etnies. I really miss having some non-running tennis shoes. I really miss my Converse! Why didn't I bring them? What was I thinking?!
One of those large containers of powdered ranch mix that can be bought at Sam's Club. Mayo and milk are easy to get here. Ranch dressing, not so much.
a Scrabble board
more educational children's books. Books on ants, spiders, volcanoes, sea creatures, bees, anything. We need more books!
good tampons. The only kind they sell here are OB and those are pretty hard to find.
food I plan on eating over the Christmas holidays:
I want my mom to cook all my favorites. I'm sorry, Mom. I promise to help! Vegetable beef stew, biscuit topped chicken pot pie, lasagna, texas sheet cake...
ok, I'm not going to continue this list. I'm making myself too hungry!
