jediwonderboy gave me:
1. Raising boys
Yes, it does seem like raising boys is my life, my whole life, and nothing but my life. The irony lies in the fact that I myself have four sisters and only one brother. My life growing up was filled with girl-stuff, so I always just assumed that I'd have girls. I was surprised when the ultrasound technician told my Zack was a boy. I was surprised again when I was told Petey was a boy (I'd convinced myself that I felt differently that time around, so it must be a girl.) I didn't need anyone to tell me Josh was a boy. As soon as the technician started the ultrasound, I spotted that tiny penis right away. "It's a boy", I told him.
Despite my surprise at being a mom to all boys, I love it. It's taken some getting used to and I'll admit to reading more than one "How to raise boys" type of book. For my boys, the most important key is knowing what is expected of them, and for those expectations to stay in place. Some people call it boundaries, rules, whatever. They need to know that someone is running the show, almost like a pack of wolves. Who's the alpha-dog? But they also need to know they're loved, unconditionally. I'm sure that's true with any child, no matter what the gender.
2 How should one properly ask for someone when calling on the telephone?
I remember being taught this lesson in third grade. Our teacher had somehow obtained several old rotary phones and we all practiced our telephone manners. I'm not sure if I do it the absolutely correct way, but these days when I call someone I just say "Hello, may I please speak with so-and-so? Thank you."
3 What is the easiest thing to fix for supper? Hot dogs, french fries and fruit (refer to #1)
4 Coffee When I saw this on my list, I was a bit baffled. Coffee? Really? But then I realized this has probably never come up in my lj so why would you know? I don't drink coffee. I've never even tasted coffee. It's a Mormon thing. I don't drink coffee, tea or any type of alcohol.
5 The first "sci fi" book you ever read. Ohh, I like this one. I can't recall the name of the book, but it's about a boy and girl who somehow slip into the fifth dimension where they are captured and taken as pets by transdimensional beings. They're kept in a cage (compared to the beings the humans are the size of hamsters.) They eventually escape and return home. The book ends with them realizing that although they are back to their own dimension, the fifth dimension still exist, constantly in conjunction with their own. It really creeped me out and was my first taste of the sci fi world. I loved it!
