Aug. 17th, 2008 07:46 pmThis afternoon I moved my tomato plant (remember it's in a bucket) out of the shade and into the sunlight. After I had it arranged, I stood there for a moment and looked it. I like to admire my gardening handy work:) Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, I saw something brown on my shoulder. I turned my head and what did I see, perched on my shoulder like some sort of creepy prehistoric parrot?
( A Praying Mantis!! )
Naturally, I shrieked, danced around and brushed him off my shoulder all in one movement. Eek! Praying Mantises just freak me out. I hate the way they can swivel their heads. There's something about those heads that seems to give them the illusion of intelligence. But there is a story behind this little mantis. We found him in the driveway yesterday and I asked Chris to put him on my tomato plant. I don't know why or how he ended up on my shoulder; was he trying to protect his home? What I find most interesting is that after my shriek dance, I just left him in the grass; yet later this evening when I went back, he was safely nestled back in the tomato plant again. It really is his home! I love that he hangs out in there, eating all the evil bugs.
