Oct. 28th, 2006 01:25 amHere's a quick down of my past week:
We've really started settling into our new home. I love it here, the boys love it here, it seems like a very ideal place for us. I don't miss the loud, hustle and bustle of the city at all. There is still some unpacking and organizing to do, but that's as with any move to a new home.
Chris talked to his boss about whether we will be able to stay on for next year or not (Fall 2007 semester). His boss said there was no way to know that at this point and that it will all depend on student enrollment. Chris told him that if not, we needed to start making other plans. His boss said to go ahead with making other plans. That's a bit of a bummer. We really like this situation and were hoping to keep this job until he finished his dissertation. When we go home on for the Christmas break, Chris plans on attending a Historian's Conference in Atlanta where he should be able to interview for various positions. Fortunately there are loads of Chinese historian positions available right now.
Zack had a fever all day yesterday. It is gone today, but he's still feeling poorly. Poor guy, he always thinks it is the end of the world when he's sick.
Mariannette threw a Halloween party for everyone on Thursday night. We had to have it early because the upcoming week is our Fall Break. Everyone will be traveling this week and no one will be here on Tuesday to celebrate the actual Halloween. It was such a fun party! Zack was Harry Potter, Petey was an alien and Connor was a pumpkin. We found some Halloween costumes at Carrefour. I wore a silver wig and Chris wore a pumpkin hat. The most fun of the evening was seeing what the students had come up with for their costumes. There was a dead Chairman Mao, a Frenchmen, a black-eyed pea, a peeping housewife, a mummy, a tomato, a couple of witches, a couple of Chinese men, some hippies, some belly dancers, 3 guys dressed as women, and a baby (this costume was actually a little appalling. The guy was naked except for an adult diaper. Fortunately, he did wrap himself up in a blanket for most of the evening, but he wasn't shy about opening his blanket to show off his diaper. Yuck!) There were also several Chinese students who attended. They had a great time and were laughing their heads off at the craziness of the American students. I left the party after a couple hours, but it went on pretty late. It seemed to me that all anyone was doing was eating (there was tons of junk food) and taking pictures. Camera's were snapping like crazy.
We are headed to Shanghai for our week off. We talked a lot about doing some major traveling for this week since we have so much time, but we just felt like we didn't want to spend that much money right now. Plus, when we landed in Shanghai, we never did do any sightseeing. We're going back to just spend sometime looking around. Also, it turns out there that Chris has a friend living there, a guy he served his mission in Taiwan with. I think we'll be staying with them while we're in Shanghai. They have two kids, so that's good news for my kids who are always looking for English-speaking kids to play with. While we are there we'll be visiting the aquarium, which Petey has been talking about since we moved here. btw, he has decided that when he grows up he is going to be a deep-sea diver and own his own aquarium.
