Gavin and Stacey

Lately, Chris and I have been watching this BBC show, Gavin and Stacey. We're in love with it, not so much for the plot, but just for the quirky characters and the awesome Welsh accents. I tell you, it has totally permeated my psyche. My inner monologue has been Welsh for the past three days!

One of the things I love about British stars is how average they are. For example, Nessa in this show is a sex goddess despite her size. Gavin, the main guy, has gappy teeth (like me!) yet he's still considered a good looking chap. Not everyone has to be perfect, and none of them really are, to be good actors, sexy (think Dawn French in the Vicar of Dibley) or attractive. People are allowed to be normal. We need a good dose of that in American tv. Even our "reality" stars are exceptionally beautiful. It is rare to see an average-looking person on tv, and when we do, it is usually because something in their life needs to be overhauled.

I agree. Found out that my stunning cousin-in-law was told that she looked like she had gained some weight as though it were a bad thing. She had a baby, it happens you know? But she is considered plus size on the model scene despite the fact that she still is a bit twiggish.

Love the image on the vid. She has attitude and spunk. Quite gorgeous too!

Yup, it is true that models are expected to be outlandishly thin. I sometimes watch Project Runway and I'm always surprised at how the models' bones protrude from their bodies. Still, I'm impressed that your cousin can still be a model after having a baby!

I love British TV in general and particularly British comedy. Haven't seen this show yet, though.

You can get the first season through Netflix. It's pretty fun. What's your favorite britcom (aside from Fawlty Towers!)

Aside from Fawlty Towers? LOL Well, the others I love are:

Are You Being Served?
To the Manor Born
Keeping Up Appearances
Waiting for God

I also like Vicar of Dibley, but it's not one I have to watch whenever it's on.

And you?

I love Keeping Up Appearances as well. Chris and I always remind each other to "mind the pedestrians, Richard." I also like Red Dwarf although I haven't seen it in a number of years, and of course, The Office.

AMEN!!! I LOVE Vicar of Dibley!!!

And I think Simon Pegg is hot.

Okay, I'm going to have to watch this now.

Simon Pegg is hot, I agree. Do you follow his Twitter?

Someday we should go to the UK together, so we can be true fangirls. We can spend the whole visit as live audience members for BBC shows :)

I would love that! Then we have to go to Cardiff and visit Torchwood AND then go on an Austen adventure and see the A&E version of Pemberley.

[identity profile] mysteena.livejournal.com 2010-04-08 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes!! Cardiff is quite close to where this show takes place, Barry Island. We could visit both places :)

It's a date!

[identity profile] mysteena.livejournal.com 2010-04-08 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
btw, you can get it through Netflix.

We stopped getting Netflix because I'm doing more studying than tv watching right now. *sigh* I do miss netflix. It was so handy.

Just tracked down the first episode. I've been looking for something new to watch. Liked this a lot.

We're on the third series now. Glad to hear that you liked it. Do you have any recommendations for us?

I really got caught up in a Fringe marathon after their first season. It's one of the few shows I follow now. 30 Rock is pretty funny and I tune into that sometimes. That's about it really. Good shows seem few and far between.

I'm kinda her, only not as alluring.

I've watched Waiting on God at my auntie's house, and I love it. But we don't get it here. Maybe Hulu ...
