How do you feel about professor's assigning readings which they themselves have written? What about articles that heavily feature them and their achievements?
Are you sure Chris wants to be in academia? You'll have to write up an oath that he will strive to be independent and friendly and nice to the staff and students and not lose his mind. Then again, he's not an engineer, so I think he'll be okay.
My management professor assigns his own text. Which I don't mind because I agree with everything he says. I don't think he's tooting his own horn - there just isn't much out there on the topic that reflects what he's trying to teach.
