How do you feel about professor's assigning readings which they themselves have written? What about articles that heavily feature them and their achievements?

So long as it's an article they photocopy and give out for free, I'm fine with it. Making students buy your book is tacky, though.

Unless it's a unique anthology or something like that. Then it's excusable.

(Someone in our department wrote a textbook that's used in our department. If you read the reviews on Amazon.com, everybody hates it. From other professors to students. But it is a text book still being used in classrooms. Ayieeee!)

Are you sure Chris wants to be in academia? You'll have to write up an oath that he will strive to be independent and friendly and nice to the staff and students and not lose his mind. Then again, he's not an engineer, so I think he'll be okay.

My management professor assigns his own text. Which I don't mind because I agree with everything he says. I don't think he's tooting his own horn - there just isn't much out there on the topic that reflects what he's trying to teach.

If they're trying to be high and mighty, that bugs me. LOOK AT ME. I WIN AT PROFESSING! I couldn't get down with that..

Interestingly enough, it is an Ethics class!

The article isn't by her, but it talks about her achievements. It doesn't focus on them as the main thesis...still, it does seem a bit odd.

I haven't ever seen Chris at work, but I know him well enough to know that he tries to treat the departmental secretaries with respect. I've told him enough about your challenges that he knows better, I hope! Still, there is something strange about the world of academics. They just seem to forget how to interact normally. My theory is that they get so immersed in their field of study, its hard for them to reemerge into the real world with the rest of us humans.
