I love the pansies -- if they would only last more than 6 days here, we'd be in good shape... Alas, if it doesn't self-water or come with something in the way of a radiation shield, it dies here within days.

I love how fertile Spokane is. I've been pleasantly surprised how long the pansies have lasted (they were a Mother's Day gift.) as, like you say, I expected them to be very short-lived.
I had an Earth Science teacher once when I lived in Florida who wasn't a native Floridian. He loved to tell the story about how he ordered a truck of top soil and was shocked by the truckload of sand that arrived at his house. When he tried to tell them he wanted top soil, not sand, they explained to him that sand IS top soil in Florida :)
