SOS Clinic

Connor is ok; he just has a respitory virus. The dr. gave him cough syrup (with coedine!) and Tylenol cough and cold. Actually, I left there with a sack full of medicine. He also gave me Bactroban (antibiotic ointment), 2 bottles of antibiotics (just in case) and an anti-diaherretic for the boys. Since this was my first visit, he just wanted to load me up with the necessities, apparently. He said he always gives his new moms antibiotics to have on hand. That way, if one of the kids wakes up in the middle of the night with a fever and pulling on their ear (clear signs of an ear infection), I can start them on the antibiotic with out having to go in to see him. The clinic is open 24 hours a day, but there are only 2 doctors. He said he has to give out antibiotics like this or else he'd be working non-stop.

I asked him about getting another Cortisone shot for my foot (it has been hurting lately) and he said he'd recommend acupuncture instead. That's something to think about...

Chris is home!!

I'm glad he's OK! BTW, I loved his comment concerning the medicine in your other entry.

*grin* thanks! I'm finally getting him to take the medicine by slipping it into his apple juice. Tricky mommy...

I'm soooo glad he's okay, I really am. Poor little guy. But that doctor is one smart dude. At least he knows.

I think acupuncture would be awesome! You never know how it might work, why not give it a shot? (*LOL* No pun intended!)

YAYAYAYAYAYAY for Chris being home!!!

rofl! I want to give it a try, just because I've heard so many good things about it. I'm just a chicken...

I'm glad to hear that Connor is alright. And I'm relieved to hear that you have access to western Drs. I had wondered about that. You didn't say much about the clinic itself. What was it like?

I meant to write more about the clinic, but it was late and I was just trying to write something before bedtime. The dr. is German and has been living in Nanjing for 6 years. Before that he lived in Africa. I really liked him, he was quite personable. He talked to me a lot about different aspects of living in Nanjing and China in general. For example, he said that we should be prepared to get a lot of respitory illnesses this winter, as there is virtually no heating in any of the buildings in the city. He said that "Mao, in all his wisdom, declared that no one living below the Yellow river needed heaters." According to him, this fact does not bother the Chinese because they all wear three layers of long johns. However, we will be freezing our bums off :)

Also, talked to me a lot about acupuncture. In his opinion, it is not a good idea to get acupuncture outside of a Western clinic. He says there is no way to be sure that the needles are single use and sterlized. He made a point to tell me that he was not critizing the chinese, and he understands that they are a developing country, but the truth of the matter is that as Westerners there are a lot of things that we don't even think about. We always assume that needles are clean because that is how things are done back home. I probably won't even cross our mind that these needles have been "cleaned" and repackaged. He also told me the figures on Hepatitis B in China. Wow, they are staggering. He said something like 2/3 of the population will have hepatatitis B in their lifetime and out of that 1/3 will need liver transplants. Where are all those livers going to come from?!

It cost a lot to go to the clinic, but we can file the claim with our insurance to be reimbursed. We didn't have to pay though, because Chris' boss said he'd go and pay it for us. They really do treat us well.

glad he is ok although respiratory infections aren't any fun at all. Sounds like a smart dr to do that. I wish more drs here did that.

I don't think a dr. could get away with it in America. Here, nothing requires a prescription (like in Mexico). Also, I was surprised when he gave me Codeine cough syrup. It works so well!
