Next time you go to the library, I want you to take a moment and look at all those books. It is taking me over an hour to catalog just one book. Just one!! Can you imagine how long it took to catalog all those myriad of books that cover the shelves in your local library? Appreciate that junk!!

Wow.

now, when you say cataloging a book, what does that mean?

For my final project in one class, I have to catalog five books. The whole class this semester has been on cataloging which is not as simple as I thought! Here's my one hours worth of work. I don't know how it will look cut and pasted in to lj, but I'll try. I have to come up with a library of congress number, assign it subject headings, measure it, blah-blah-blah! I no likey.

So you had to look all that up and it took an hour? I don't even know what half of that stuff means!! holy moley! I...wow...I'm speechless.

Will you have to do this alot as a librarian?

[identity profile] mysteena.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have to look it all up, just some of it. A lot of it I have to determine from looking at the title page and page verso of the book.

I hope I won't have to do a lot of this. Most places employ a full time cataloger and I personally have no interest in pursuing that field. But we shall see what comes about...
