My first review for my Resources for Children class:

Seeger, Laura Vaccaro. One Boy. Illustrated by Laura Vaccaro Seeger. A Neal Porter Book/Roaring Brook Press, 2008. 48 pages. Hardcover $14.95 ISBN 978-1-59643-274-1

What should a boy do, when he finds himself all alone? Multiple award-winning author and illustrator Laura Vaccaro Seeger takes us on a simple yet vivid journey to discover the answer to this question. At first glance, One Boy appears deceptively simple: it is a counting book. Isn’t it? Each page has a window, revealing a peek onto the next page that allows readers to try and guess what the illustration might be. When the page is turned, the text changes: “Three apes” becomes “Big escape” and “Four monkeys” becomes “Held the key.” No longer is this simply a counting book, but it becomes an innovative learning-to-read book as well. This book not only allows for speculation about the upcoming illustrations, but also shows children how words can become part of other words. This book has sturdy pages, perfect for curious preschoolers who will want to explore the simple yet stunning illustrations. As readers progress through numbers one to ten, they discover that each picture is a painting by the lonely boy we met in the beginning. Aside from its value as a counting book, a learning-to-read book and a beautiful picture book, One Boy has an important lesson to teach its readers: just because the boy is alone, does not mean that he is lonely. Recommended for ages 4-8.
