It is a wonder what time away from the kids can do for me. I spent 5 hours out of the house today. Five glorious hours.

Megan seems like a great babysitter. She only charges 30 rmb an hour ($3.75). She fed the kids, read to them and Connor's diaper was nice and clean when we got home. All was well. Earlier this evening, Chris checked the history on the kids computer. I'm not sure why, but anyway it turned out that she was doing some reading up on Mormons living in China. Hmmm. She also opened several of our documents, some church related, some not. She looked at several of Chris' school papers. First, I wonder how she figured out we are Mormon? Second, I wonder if she thinks we are here on the sly, trying to do covert missionary work? No, we aren't. We are very careful not to speak about the church and our beliefs to any Chinese. That is completely off limits and we know it. So, should we say something to her about snooping through our documents on the laptop? There's nothing we have to hide, there was no harm done. I'd really like to use her again (often!) but I do feel a bit weirded out knowing that she was looking at stuff like that.

I have a new toy! Chris and I both bought Razrs today. So fun! And we'll be able to use them when we move back home. We didn't have cell phones back home. They were just an extra expense that we couldn't justify on our limited income. Here, the program pays for our cell service. Besides that, practically everyone in China has a cell phone. They are much more prevalent than in the US (if you can believe that.) And not only are they more popular, but they work better. Cell phones here get reception in elevators, subways, everywhere. There is never a problem with service. What I find most interesting is text messaging in Chinese. Somehow, and don't ask me how, they use the a 9 digit phone pad to text message in Chinese characters. Pretty amazing, hmmm?

Lunch with the church ladies was really fun. We went to a French restaurant where I ordered spaghetti (I know, I know. I'm a culinary wimp sometimes.) After lunch we went to a clothing store that sells beautiful ethnic minority clothing and embroidered mary-janes. I wanted to get a pair of blue mary janes embroidered with red roses, but I'm not sure where I would wear them. And the bottoms are cloth, so I would be worried about ruining them if I wore them outside. They were just so pretty, almost like a work of art. They had beautiful jewelry there. I thought of you, [livejournal.com profile] risingpheenix, and wished you were there to ooh and aah over the jewelry with me. I also learned that they will custom make clothes for you, if they don't have your size (which of course they don't for me.)

Guess what! The kids made some friends tonight. There were some preteen aged girls at the park tonight who spoke a little English. They hung out with the boys and played with them for quite a while. I love girls that age because they aren't too cool to play, yet they are old enough to know what the kids can or can't do safely. They liked trying to talk with the kids although they had a hard time understanding Petey. I'm so happy they met some kids willing to play with them, finally.

Chris' birthday is in 10 days. He'll be 33. Wow. How did we get this old?
